Black mould around a bath, shower tray or basin can start as a few small marks and gradually turn into stained, peeling or failed silicone. This guide shows what each stage looks like, when cleaning may still help, and when replacing the seal is the better option.

Why new silicone should not simply go over the old seal

If the old silicone is mouldy, loose or failing, putting a fresh bead over the top usually gives a poor result. The old seal needs to be removed so the joint can be cleaned, dried and prepared before new sanitary silicone is applied.
