Before using these measurements

These measurements are practical starting points. Some are based on UK Building Regulations-style guidance, some are manufacturer-led, and others are common trade or design standards used around the home.

Always measure from finished floor level

Most fitting heights should be measured from the finished floor level, not the bare subfloor. If tiles, screed, laminate, underlay or luxury vinyl have not been installed yet, allow for the final floor build-up before fixing anything permanently.

Standard height vs accessible height

Older homes often have low sockets, high switches and inconsistent layouts. New work, extensions and major refurbishments are a good opportunity to place fittings in a more accessible and practical position.

Wall-hung toilet example

If a toilet frame is fitted before screed and tiles are installed, the finished floor can rise by 20–40mm. Mark a clear 1-metre line from the intended finished floor level before setting out frames, pipes, sockets and accessories.

Fitting height FAQs

Common questions about fitting heights, measuring points and practical placement around the home.

A typical UK kitchen worktop is around 900mm from the finished floor to the top of the worktop. This can be adjusted for taller or shorter users.

In many modern UK homes, socket outlets are commonly placed around 450mm or higher from the finished floor to the centre of the socket. Older homes often have lower sockets.

Light switches are commonly placed between 900mm and 1200mm from the finished floor to the centre of the switch. Around 1100–1200mm is common in many homes.

For a standard domestic bathroom, a finished toilet seat height around 400–430mm is common. Comfort-height toilets are higher. Always allow for finished flooring before fixing the frame.

A common internal door setting-out method is to place the top hinge around 150mm from the top of the door and the bottom hinge around 225mm from the bottom. A middle hinge is often centred between them on heavier or taller doors.

Around 1200mm from the ground to the camera or button centre is a practical starting point for many video doorbells. Always check the manufacturer’s field-of-view guidance.

Around 1200mm from the ground to the charger or handle area is a useful domestic benchmark for reach and cable handling. The charger manufacturer’s instructions should always be followed.

No. Standard heights are useful starting points, but the final position should account for the product instructions, room layout, user height, accessibility needs, finished floor level and any relevant regulations.
