Helpful insight

A 7kW wallbox will not always charge a PHEV at 7kW. Some plug-in hybrids have a 3.3kW, 3.7kW or 6.6kW onboard charger, so the car may become the limit rather than the wallbox.

Charging guide

How long does it take to charge a plug-in hybrid?

A plug-in hybrid usually has a smaller battery than a full electric car, so charging is often measured in hours rather than overnight. The exact time depends on battery size, the vehicle’s onboard AC charging limit and how much charge you are adding.

Many PHEVs are best suited to a 3-pin plug or 7kW home wallbox. A higher-powered public AC charger only helps when the vehicle itself supports faster AC charging.

3-pin plug

Useful for smaller plug-in hybrid batteries and occasional charging, but slower and less convenient than a proper wallbox.

7kW wallbox

The sweet spot for most homes. Many plug-in hybrids can recharge comfortably within a few hours.

11kW / 22kW AC

Useful only where the car supports higher AC charging. Many PHEVs cap charging below this.

Updated for June 2026

This calculator focuses on externally chargeable hybrid vehicles, including PHEV, SHS, SHS-P, CSH, DM-i, EM-i, eHybrid, TFSI e, E-Tense, 4xe, E-Hybrid, Recharge and range-extender systems. It avoids ordinary self-charging hybrids because they cannot be charged from a socket, home wallbox or public charger.

Questions people ask

Plug-in hybrid charging FAQ

Can all hybrid cars be charged from a wallbox?
No. Only plug-in hybrids and externally chargeable hybrid systems can be charged from a wallbox or socket. Mild hybrids and self-charging hybrids cannot normally be plugged in.
What do PHEV, SHS, DM-i and REEV mean?
PHEV is the general term for a plug-in hybrid. SHS or SHS-P is used by brands such as Omoda and Jaecoo. DM-i is used by BYD. EM-i is used by Geely. REEV usually means a range-extender vehicle that can be charged externally but also has a petrol engine generator.
Can I charge a plug-in hybrid from a normal 3-pin plug?
Many PHEVs can be charged from a normal domestic socket using the correct manufacturer-approved cable, but a dedicated wallbox is usually quicker and more convenient for regular home charging.
Why does my PHEV charge slower than my wallbox rating?
The vehicle’s onboard AC charger may be the limiting factor. For example, if the car only accepts 3.7kW AC, a 7kW wallbox will still charge at around the vehicle’s lower limit.
Should I charge a PHEV to 100%?
Many plug-in hybrid owners charge to 100% before short daily journeys because the battery is relatively small and the aim is to maximise electric-only miles. Always follow the vehicle manufacturer’s guidance.

Need to compare a PHEV with a full EV?

This calculator is built for plug-in hybrids and externally chargeable hybrid systems. For full electric cars and vans, use the main EV charging calculator instead.
